Sunflower Extravaganza

Sunflowers seem to be the hit item this year. So I suppose, I went a little crazy with them. I painted this trio at the same time, keeping the palette in similar hues. They are warmer than my prior sunflowers, which makes it more about autumn with the sun changing and the those last days of warm weather.  I made some on canvas board so that those of you who just want a hint of color or have a smaller space to fill also have a selection to choose from. Or keep them as a trio. Or perhaps, just the two smaller panels that you can frame and brighten up a room. Choices are good.

I forgot

I forgot to put this one up. This is for those of you who love autumn. "End of Summer" (#21-48) 12" x 16" oil on canvas Available on Etsy.com and DailyPaintworks.com Just click on the buttons on the right side.

New Paintings

New to Etsy.com and DailyPaintworks.com Just put up on-line,  another sunflower floral bursting with color. "Late Summer Breeze" (#21-51) 12" x 12" x 1.5" Gallery Canvas Oil Already varnished and ready to go! These sunflowers are painted in warm tones, depicting the wonderful summer weather we have had  all the way into the middle of October.  As it pours outside right now, I can only reminisce.   As usual, I have continued the painting off the edges.  Keep it as is or frame it, it's your choice.

At the end...

I have been painting this canvas since August.  It is finally done! To get an idea about its size, you can see my desk and painting station below. I named it JOY! It's full of life and colour. Lots of energy. All wrapped up and ready to go. I hope to soon have a photo of it in its new home.

Commission

I have been working on a commission piece for a few months now. Deciding on the layout was really what took the longest length of time and is really the most important element about a painting. If you don't like the subject, nor the composition,  there really isn't any going back.  Painting on such a large canvas is always intimidating. It's a large surface.  The drawing didn't go straight on perfect and I had to shift things around a little. I am also working from multiple reference photos (one for each flower and then the leaves in a separate one). You will see changes to this drawing as I continue.  Correcting the drawing and filling in the colors came next. If you look at the top left corner you will see that I took a flower out because it just wasn't working. This next stage was filling in the details and getting the shadows right. With all the references coming from different sources the light sources were also different.  Cleaning up the lines and making the

All done!

These four are now all finished! "Spring's Rhythm" "Spring's Song" "End of Summer" "Sunburst!"

Progress Shots

This canvas was painted grey to cover up the old painting underneath. I drew on the picture in light yellow to start and then added more colors as I went. I was able to bring in a little bit of the shadows. I concentrated on yellow as that is what was mixed on my palette. I hate wasting paint and once its mixed, that's it. I have a few hours to finish it because it will be half solidified by the next day and I never use that because you get clumps and bits. This is where I will always stop a painting, having the base colors done.  The next part of the process is starting over and going over the entire painting again. I really wish I was one of those painters who can knock a painting out in a few hours and it looks amazing. "End of Summer" (21-48) 12" x 16" x .75" oil on canvas
