Labradors

Different types of fur is something I didn't really encounter with flowers, it's a new challenge. Black Lab 10"x8" oil on canvas board I found these types of dogs were more sculptural and I could use nice thick paint strokes.  Chocolate Lab (3/4 view) 8"x8" oil on canvas board

Fluffy

Still in the blonde tones but hashing out background colors. Poodle Mix  8"x8" oil on canvas board Also trying to figure out curls and strands. Teacup Poodle 10"x8" oil on canvas board

Experimenting

While still experimenting with materials (I know many artists work on wood to keep the canvas texture at bay, especially with small artworks). I think I am just so used to working with canvas and canvas board that I don't really have a preference. The wood is smoother overall but the costs are higher. Is it worth the difference? I don't know. Golden Labrador Retriever 12" x 9" wood panel (birch) gessoed Golden Labradoodle (closeup) 8"x10" oil on canvas board This was a day of a blonde palette.  Still working out the details and figuring things out.

Something New and Unexpected!

Pet Portraits!!! I have painted a few furry critters over the years but I had a casual request to put some in a local shop and I thought, why not? So for the past few weeks I have been painting away to see what I can come up with. I explored various materials.  Winnie on gesso board 8"x8" Penny on birch wood mounted. 10"x8" These were my first two attempts and I am very pleased to say that they get better as I painted away.

Black canvas

I have painted on black canvases before but this one is the largest. My drawing wasn't anything detailed, I went in with a rather vague idea of what I wanted with only knowing where I wanted the roses to be. I tried to figure out the leaves as I went, as well as the colors to use. You always ask yourself where do you stop and how much detail to use. Sometimes it works and sometimes you over do it. Only time will tell.
