Another Process Painting

This is another example of me painting over something on a canvas.  I only do it if there is a little bit of paint like a drawing that just didn't make the cut or an underpainting where the paint has been thinned out a lot. I don't want to work on a rough surface and I certainly and not going to sell it that way either. This base painting came out really well. You can see the drawing lines still but they are not overwhelming and all the colors are already there. Putting the time in the prep work really pays off. I went back in and pushed the rendering further and was glad to see that there were not too many drawing mistakes to be fixed. Always glad when that happens. I stopped here. Although there is more rendering and everything is shaped more I have lost some of the color. The next part in the process will be me going back in with some color.

What I am working on...

I have been working on this painting for a little while now. It still isn't completely finished but it's almost there. When it is done it will be called "Tranquility". As I always try to do, I have taken progress photos of the process.   Sometimes I paint over another painting if the canvas isn't too marred.  When I do this it's imperative to cover the entire canvas with the base colors so you aren't looking at two drawings overlapping one another. This gives me an idea about space and position.  I try to get a sense of the colors but also for the tone, the values are just as important I generally start with a grey background. With so many leaves I had to play around with a lot of greens. I also had to keep going in and remembering where the leaves start and finish. At this point I can tell whether the painting is working or not. There are a lot of paintings that don't continue after this point. Every artist has a pile of artwork that just doesn't

It's been a great week!

I am trying to remember to put everything up on social media. There are so many forums and sometimes (okay, most of the time) one or more get forgotten or are totally out of date. So here goes... These two paintings sold just this week. Peony in the Sky This little gem was sold to an wonderful lady in Quebec whom wrote me such a beautiful letter back.  I am so glad that this painting means so much to you! Endless August Barely dried and off into its packaging.  I didn't realize it at first but this happy painting is off to a home in Illinois where I have also sold another painting four years ago. Glad that it's going somewhere where it will be appreciated. Emergence This painting has arrived in North Carolina! I have been in correspondence with Nancy for quite a few months now and I have to say she is such a dream to talk with (or message as the case may be). I am so lucky to have such wonderful patrons. I get such amazing feedback from everyone which I really appreciate!  Than

Finished!

I have finished off this little 12" by 12" painting. I am happy that this was a quick one. Everything seemed to fall into place without too much fuss. I wish they all were like this. Now, to name it... that is always a much harder process. "Endless August" (#21-44) 12" x 12" x .75" oil on canvas Sunflowers are so dramatic. I do enjoy painting them.

Sunflowers

Here's a look at the Sunflowers in process as they develop. Almost done! Just a few touch ups.
