So here it is, framed!
You can see the height, no more smashing heads on this one.
You can start to see the shape coming along.
There were a few things that I really wanted to incorporate but also not break the bank on. I wanted a Dutch door. I wanted a large skylight and I wanted a cupola. I also wanted a flower box on the front.
Here's where we get crafty and thrifty at the same time.
We bought the French glass door off of a Kijiji site (much like Craigslist) for $65. It was a little banged up, needed a new handle and paint really helped. They cost at least $650 here, each. Saved! See, now I'm in my husbands good books, he loves saving money.
My husband and his father (carpenter by trade) made these wonderful doors from scratch! I wish I got photos of the process but if you knew my father-in-law, you would know that he works at a speed that is not human.
My design but they did all the work.
(I am a dictator when it comes to my designs)
The cost of wood this spring was ridiculous so we tried to save wherever we could. The glass was cut somewhere locally and was only about $30 for each door. I am not sure how much these doors would have cost, if I was to guess it would be around $800, especially since they would have been a custom make.
We made the window, skylight and cupola ourselves.
Look up how much a cupola costs. It's crazy and we wanted it for the shed so we did not want to hand out hundreds of dollars for a little box on a roof. We bought four vents from the local hardware store and used scraps of wood for the structure. After that it was just paint.
We were in our third lockdown at the time so we were ordering on-line for everything (this is also why the roof was darker than we expected / it looked lighter on our screens) so we had to order at the beginning of the week to get it for the weekend or we had to wait another week.
This project took us months because there were weeks when nothing happened, whether it was waiting for supplies, weather or just being busy in life.
Also made the window box too!
I'll tell you more about that tomorrow.
