Learning Curve

It took me three weeks (roughly) to paint approximately 25 small dog paintings.
Of those paintings, I will only use 12 for my portfolio.
I am showing some of the "no pile" to you up here, they just are not going to make the cut.

This one below is a YES!
German Shepherd
8" x 8"
oil on canvas board

This one below is a NO!
White Samoyed
8" x 8"
oil on canvas board

The Samoyed didn't work out on such a small scale. Even though I tried to put definition into the fur, it was a hard sell. At least, at this size structure. The German Shepherd was mostly painted with a very small round brush to get in the details. There wasn't much to paint with.
So I learned two things from this; white dogs need to be painted larger or with greater light contrast and 8 inches is as small as I am going to go (with limitations).

As I get better at painting I have found the amount of NO paintings is lessening, but don't be fooled, they are still there. It's what we learn from.

Spring Rhythm

This is another one of my faves! It's a softer Spring piece but there is something almost musical about the flow throughout. The yellow flowers were trimmed from my rosebush out in the front yard. The rest of the arrangement came from Creekview Floral, who do amazing bouquets and arrangements.  "Spring Rhythm" 12 x 16 oil on canvas This one needs a new home!
